- Preliminary assessment of distribution in the state conducted by Peter Weigl between 1986-1991 (Weigl et al. 1999)
- Range-wide nest box monitoring program was established for Carolina northern flying squirrel by North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission from 1996 - present.
- Collaborative partner with Virginia Tech, USGS Virginia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, and Mars Hill to develop ultrasonic acoustic monitoring for Carolina northern flying squirrel in the state. Already determine four previously undocumented populations, with two of those populations confirmed with camera traps.
- Preliminary surveys conducted by Dr. Mike Kennedy in the 1980s.
- No long-term nest box monitoring program for Carolina northern flying squirrel was established in the state.
- Range-wide next box monitoring program was established for Carolina northern flying squirrel and Virginia northern flying squirrel by Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries from 1985-1996. Nest box program was discontinued due to extremely low capture rates. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area took over the state's nest box program at Whiteop and Mt. Rogers from 1996-2004, after which the program was discontinued.
- Range-wide nest box monitoring program was established by West Virginia Department of Natural Resources for the Virginia northern flying squirrel from 1985 - present.
